"While the friendly faces at George's draw much business, you can't ignore the food. The eatery serves three meals a day and prides iteslf on using only local products..."
Penfield, N.Y. —
Customers were unhappy when the Duchess Restaurant in Penfield closed last year, but now it has returned under new management.
About 60 staff from Duchess have gone back to work at a new location in Panorama Plaza. It is owned by Garry Serosyan and his wife Ovsanna, who used to work as a hostess at Duchess.
They opened the doors to George’s Restaurant, named after their 3-year-old son, George, on March 5.
“We see a lot of familiar faces and previous customers from Duchess,” said Garry. “It’s very friendly staff, and people know them. It’s like a family.”
After two decades of service, the Duchess closed in February 2011 when owner George Naselaris retired. He now lives in Indiana and has no ties to the new restaurant, aside from keeping in touch with his former employees.
The fate of the old restaurant building at 441/250 remains unknown at this time, but the new owners say they are happier with the Panorama location because of its central location, making it a convenient stop for customers in nearby towns like Fairport, Brighton, East Rochester and Pittsford.
As word about the re-opening continues to spread, George’s has gotten a steady stream of business in its first two weeks as old and new customers come. As they walk in, it’s almost like a reunion when Ovsanna greets old patrons at the door.
“This is a community restaurant,” said Ovsanna. “They’re not just coming here for food.”
The owners first came to the United States from Armenia — Garry, 48, in 1996 and Ovsanna, 37, in 2006. Before coming to the U.S., Ovsanna managed a restaurant for nine years before working at Duchess for four. The couple now lives with their son in Macedon.
While the friendly faces at George’s draw much business, you can’t ignore the food. The eatery serves three meals a day and prides itself on using only local products in their dishes on the menu, which has many of the same choices as Duchess with dinner specials every night of the week.
With a fresh new start, it’s a new chapter at a local favorite, as Garry explained.
“Everybody’s happy to be back.”

"George's Restaurant recently opened at Panorama Plaza with a varied menu and an experienced staff that has served diners in Penfield and the surrounding area for many years."
Tucked in the right-hand corner of Panorama Plaza is the new George’s Restaurant which I learned is named after the owners’ three-year-old son. I spoke with the owners – Oxsanna and Garry Serosyan – who proudly opened their new establishment just two weeks ago.
George's Restaurant recently opened at Panorama Plaza with a varied menu and an experienced staff that has served diners in Penfield and the surrounding area for many years.
“We picked this location,” said Garry, “because it is centrally located between Penfield, East Rochester, Brighton and even Webster.” He described how hard they worked to make George’s Restaurant a nice family dining experience. This included a new floor, redecorating the dining area and totally rebuilding the kitchen with new equipment. Add a varied menu, good food at reasonable prices and excellent service and you wind up with a restaurant that people will enjoy.
Speaking of the menu, I mentioned to Oxsanna and Garry that it was an interesting mix of typical fare and Mediterranean items. They explained that the menu is the result of their extensive experience of running restaurants in their native Armenia and many years of working at the Dutchess Restaurant which used to be located at routes 250 and 441 before it closed. Oxsanna used to be the hostess there and she, the kitchen staff and most of the servers are now at George’s Restaurant, inviting everyone to come and enjoy their new restaurant.
George’s Restaurant has a really extensive breakfast menu with items like breakfast sandwiches, Eggs Benedict, pancakes and Belgian waffles and lots more that have proven to be favorites at the Dutchess Restaurant.
The lunch menu includes hot and cold sandwiches including the Turkey Club, gyros, Monte Cristo and fish sandwiches. For dinner, I will definitely go back to try their Spanakopita which is a handmade Greek spinach pie served with Greek salad, dressing and grilled pita bread. Other choices include Chicken Parmigiana, Chicken French, spaghetti and meatballs and daily specials like Eggplant Parmigiana, Salmon with Alfredo Sauce and stuffed cabbage or peppers.
Oxsanna and Garry Serosyan are your hosts at this family owned and operated Penfield restaurant.
“We call it a family restaurant,” said Garry, “and that’s how we are going to treat our customers…like a family. We want them to come in and have a great time, relax and enjoy our food and service.”
George’s Restaurant is family owned and operated. It is at 1601 Penfield Road. They are open from 7 am to 9 pm Monday through Thursday, 7 am to 10 pm on Friday and 7 am to 3 pm on Sunday.
